BIGDIRTYENGINE are excited to announce that BLACK MANILA will be headlining the Slumbarave tent within the Shangri La area at this year’s Glastonbury Festival…
The boys will be playing a stage that’s been crafted into a giant ‘Pillow Fight Club’.  A cage, wherein bands play as pillow fight bouts go off…
Using over 1500 crew and artists, Shangri La fill their area with a series of interactive installations to create a wholly immersive world and a storyline for festival goers and performers to experience and bring to life.
This year’s vision will take the form of a futuristic and dystopian wonderland… An after-hours pleasure city, within which, Slumbarave’s tent manifests as ‘Metropolis Hotel’.
Hotel guest gain priority access to ‘The Pillow Cage’- a private members bar and pillow ‘Fight Club’, where, safely restrained within the ‘Pillow Fight Cage’ our boys… psychedelic garage- punk band BLACK MANILA will unleash their electrifyingly brand of rock n’ roll on a audience alleged to be ‘free of any form of moral or physical contamination’… (some chance).
Get your tickets and make your way to Hotel Metropolis on Thursday and Saturday night of this year’s festival for a riot with BLACK MANILA.

The evolving storyline develops year by year: In 2009 it was a pleasure city run by a corrupt dictatorship. In 2010 the ruling administration was overthrown and the city opened up to rebels and chancers. The 2011 storyline is pre-apocalyptic – we see the population of Shangri–La preparing to flee. The slums have spread far and wide a virulent disease is spreading rapidly so they’ve given up on trying to save the planet.  Instead, they are about to colonise a new planet, leaving all the rubbish behind.   They’ve already shrinkwrapped or shipped off their most valuable assets and now they are about to give the last and best party of their lives.  But, in order to get to the new, much cleaner and much much better Shangri-La, people must prove themselves to be free of any form of moral or physical contamination…
The Virus is spread via touch.  By covering the walls of our slum-land alleys in invisible UV paint, we have a visual way of “infecting†tens of thousands and creating two groups -  the contaminated and the clean.   The contaminated will be funnelled through The Decontamination Chambers, a series of hexagonal interactive installations manned by Guerilla Science that offers both moral and physical decontamination.    Post-decontamination, the newly cleansed individual will be dressed in a bio-hazard suit and allowed access to The Skywalk – the first stage of the journey to a cleaner place. The Skywalk is a towering, sleek, white walkway - the physical manifestation of the concept that the clean is elevated above the dirty.  Floating above the filth of the slum below, it provides a prime vantage point from which one can survey the filthy unfortunates below….
All those who contribute to Shangri-La, from artists to audience, become part of this story. They respond to and intervene with this world, creating sub-plots via their installations, venues and performances that take the story and the audience into a myriad of fresh places. Packed with venues varying in scale from the massive to the minute, there are interactive venues, big live stages, an outdoor dance arena and maze of covered alleys riddled with tiny nano-venues with hidden doors leading to further doors hiding more places inside… this is a complex world with layers and layers and layers for the audience to explore…
